LLUMI - pet urn that illuminates the memory of beloved fluff. Fluff Above and Manukians Studio have designed a modern urn for the ashes of a furry friend, cat, or dog. We sought a symbol for all the joyful instances that pets bring into our lives, and we had an epiphany: the reflection of sunlight – bright, playful, and full of hope. We put these senses into LLUMI's one-of-a-kind and simple design, which will be a daily reminder of furry friend's radiant spirit.

The main stages of work on LLUMI were: design research, design session, sketching, modeling + prototyping, construction + production, assembly, working with colors and various materials.
step 1: design-research
It’s analytical work when you better understand what you create and what properties you want to give to the object. It’s a process of clarification of the technical task. You can ask stupid questions in the GPT chat, the client, and yourself at this stage.
step 2: design session + variability
We are searching for visual language and analyzing analogs. At this stage, it’s a critical moment to establish contact with the client to be on the same page throughout the entire project.

Working with artificial intelligence is a relatively new tool for the studio. In the LLUMI project, we used Midjourney in the “expansion” phase, when every visual finding could reinforce the existing work. It is not a magic wand or a pill for all diseases. It’s just a plus-one tool on par with a pencil, a mock-up knife, or a graphic editor.
step 3: sketching
It’s a stage where ideas are born and die. Different concepts: simple and complex, superficial and deep, quite fantasy or close to reality. It’s a unique opportunity to see what goes on in the designer’s mind with your own eyes. The first “green” sketches are very personal, even intimate.
step 4: prototyping
After working on the meanings, we also worked on the form. We have modeled and printed more than ten variations of urn shape in a 1:5 scale.
step 5: sample
The sample is a prototype made in the M 1:1 scale. At this stage, we tested various materials and production technologies: 3D printing, CNC milling, CNC laser, basic woodworking and post-processing.
